Com o avanço tecnológico e o aumento do acesso à internet, a forma como vivemos e nos relacionamos mudou drasticamente nos últimos anos. Segundo dados da União Internacional de Telecomunicações (UIT), em janeiro de 2023, cerca de 5,6 bilhões de pessoas em todo o mundo estavam usando a internet. No entanto, apesar do grande número de usuários, a inclusão digital ainda é um desafio em muitas partes do mundo e cerca de 2,7 bilhões de pessoas em todo o mundo ainda não têm acesso à internet.
A falta de acesso à internet pode ter consequências significativas na vida das pessoas, especialmente em países em desenvolvimento. De acordo com a UIT, apenas 40% da população da África tinha acesso à internet em 2022, em comparação com 89% na Europa.
Ainda, a falta de alfabetização digital também é um desafio significativo, pois muitas pessoas não possuem as habilidades necessárias para usar a internet de forma eficaz e segura. A exclusão digital pode limitar o acesso à educação, oportunidades econômicas e informações importantes, o que dificulta a melhoria da qualidade de vida das pessoas.
O avanço da tecnologia também aumentou os desafios relacionados à segurança e privacidade dos usuários. De acordo com o levantamento feito pela Statista, o custo anual dos crimes cibernéticos pode crescer até 40% e atingir US$ 11,5 trilhões (R$ 59 trilhões) em 2023. Os crimes virtuais, como o phishing e o ransomware, afetaram milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, colocando em risco dados pessoais e informações confidenciais.
Além disso, a disseminação de informações falsas e desinformação é um desafio significativo na era da internet. As redes sociais se tornaram uma fonte popular de notícias para muitas pessoas, mas a disseminação de informações imprecisas ou enganosas pode ter consequências graves, como decisões equivocadas e danos à democracia. Segundo uma pesquisa do Pew Research Center, cerca de dois terços dos adultos nos Estados Unidos usam as redes sociais como fonte de notícias.
É fundamental encontrar um equilíbrio entre a liberdade de expressão e a proteção contra abusos na era da internet. Isso significa que os governos, empresas de tecnologia e organizações da sociedade civil devem trabalhar juntos para implementar regulamentações adequadas que protejam os usuários e promovam a transparência e a responsabilização.
O Dia Mundial da Internet, celebrado em 17 de maio, marca uma ocasião significativa para refletirmos sobre o papel fundamental desempenhado pela internet em nossa vida cotidiana. Essa data nos lembra da sua importância tanto na promoção da inclusão social e econômica quanto na conexão com o mundo. No entanto, juntamente com seus benefícios, a internet também traz consigo desafios importantes que precisamos enfrentar de forma assertiva. Entre eles, destacam-se a necessidade de garantir o acesso equitativo, promover a segurança online e incentivar a responsabilidade social. Para assegurarmos que a internet continue a ser uma ferramenta poderosa para o bem, é crucial que trabalhemos em conjunto, unindo indivíduos e organizações governamentais, para enfrentar tais desafios e alcançar a inclusão digital de forma abrangente.
